Call for Applications: Saxena Center for Contemporary South Asia Graduate Prize Teaching Fellowship
Introduction to South Asia | Spring 2025

Description: The Saxena Center for Contemporary South Asia invites applications from advanced doctoral candidates in the humanities and social sciences at Brown University to teach an introductory-level undergraduate seminar on the study of South Asia. The course will emphasize South Asian themes.

All proposed courses should address themes of shared interest across South Asia and build on the rich interdisciplinary literature of the region. Applicants are encouraged to identify their own approach to course design and content, although sample syllabi are provided. South Asia faculty at Brown will be available to mentor the teaching fellow on final course content. The course will be taught in the department of the selected fellow and may be cross-listed with Watson. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Responsibilities: The fellow will teach a weekly seminar for up to 20 undergraduate students and hold at least two open office hours per week. The estimated workload for the course is 12-15 hours per week.

Eligibility: Advanced doctoral candidates in the humanities and social sciences in good academic standing at Brown University, including those from Anthropology, Comparative Literature, Economics, English, History, Modern Culture and Media, Political Science, and Sociology, may apply. Applicants must have All But Dissertation (ABD) status. Graduate students who are independent instructors must have their courses approved through the College Curriculum Committee, and all such instructors are expected to have previous teaching experience equaling two Teaching Assistantships.

Funding and Award: The fellowship award consists of a $13,000 stipend for one semester and $2,000 in research funds. The semester you will be teaching is negotiable. If applicable, health insurance, dental insurance, and coverage of the health services fee will be provided by the graduate school for students in years 1-5, year 6 with a DCP, and year 7 with a DEP.

Application and Deadline: Please submit a one-page statement of purpose detailing your interest in the position, teaching experience, and current status as a graduate student (year, expected graduation date, competing employment or academic demands expected in 2025-2026, name of your DGS, etc.), a course outline with a rough syllabus, and a CV to southasia@brown.edu by March 17, 2025. The committee understands the short preparation time for this application and expects basic proposals. Applicants will be notified as soon as possible after the submission deadline.
